The U.S. Alpine Championships are a culmination of the ski racing year which brings together the U.S. Ski Team and hundreds of young athletes from U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association club programs from across the country. Complete with opening ceremonies, parties and world class racing.

Carbon Free Event

Carbon Lighthouse has partnered with Squaw Valley to make this the first ever carbon-neutral U.S. Alpine Championships.

In order to raise awareness around the impact of climate change on the winter sports community, we have identified the major sources of carbon at the event—including spectator and athlete travel, mountain operations, and hotel stays associated with the event—and will be buying carbon allowances that address this pollution. This complements other efforts we have already initiated to reduce our infrastructure’s carbon footprint by 10%, such as: replacing old lighting at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, and installing automated controls on our swimming pool at High Camp and in our office spaces. We’ve also been testing biodiesel in our vehicles and sponsoring the Free TART Ski Shuttle on the weekends during the winter season) to help reduce carbon emissions from vehicles.

Secondly, we are working with our local trash hauler, Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal, to pilot a compost program for the event to help develop composting for the region

Squaw Athletes

Olympic Gold Medalist Julia Mancuso	Julia Mancuso splits her time between Squaw Valley, Hawaii and hotel rooms across the globe. In between, she has captured more Olympic medals than any other American woman with three. As a four-event athlete from the beginning Mancuso started World Cup racing and was a NorAm champion at 16, competed in the Olympics at 17, set a U.S. mark for Junior World Championships medals before she was out of her teens, and started her twenties by capturing two World Championships medals. Mancuso tallied 1,020 World Cup points in 2012 to finish fourth in the overall standings, second in super G and top 10 in downhill and giant slalom. It was her best season since 2007 and included a stunning super G victory in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany and a dominating performance at the Moscow city event. She then closed out the season by upping her own U.S. Championships title record to 15 before heading back to Hawaii to solar power up for the 2013 World Championship year. Moral of the story is Mancuso is fully healthy, fully confident and knows there are World Cup titles and more World Championships medals (she has yet to win gold) on the horizon.
World Cup winner Marco Sullivan	With skiing in his soul Marco Sullivan grew up in Lake Tahoe and was on a ski hill from his earliest memory, coming down a snow-covered gravel hill in his backyard at 3. He learned to go fast on some of the gnarliest terrain at Squaw Valley and was a promising four-event skier before he started to concentrate on downhill. It's all about the speed. Sully was starting to get things dialed in during the 2012 season with downhill points across six races and a solid 17th in the Lake Louise, Canada super G. His equipment was starting to feel dialed, but he still felt like there was a lot more he could have accomplished on the results side. Still healthy and smiling, he's back for the World Championship season and as eager to win as ever. A third victory at the annual Arctic Man Ski and Snow Go classic plus a filming trip with Warren Miller in Alaska will do that.
U.S. Champion Travis Ganong	Travis Ganong knows how to pick a line down a race course and in the backcountry, but it was the line set by older sisters Megan and Ali, which helped reel him into ski racing. He launched his World Cup career in 2010 and has quickly become a leading member of the future downhill greats club. Ganong turned a semi-frustrating start of the 2012 season into a full court press come January where he stuffed a career-best 12th down the throat of the famed Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbuehel, Austria. Though for Ganong, the true payday didn't come until spring when he linked up with Warren Miller and Points North Heli for an AK segment in the famous fall classic ski film.
Bryce Bennett	Another in the long line of Squaw Valley powder hounds (Julia Mancuso, Marco Sullivan, Travis Ganong), Bryce Bennett blasted onto the U.S. Development Team in the same way he hucks cliffs at Squaw – by going big. An invite to a 2011 spring tryout camp proved to be the only opportunity he needed and successfully punched a ticket onto the team by showing coaches his form on the hard stuff is just as solid as it is in the fluff. He continued to ski large in 2012 by producing top 25 performances in super G, slalom and combined at the Junior World Championships, including a stunning sixth in the combined. He then rolled that speed into the Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships and stomped a blitz of junior podiums, enough to skip a rung on the U.S. Ski Team ladder by leaping C Team entirely.
Nick Daniels	On skis at the age of 3 and a member of the Squaw Valley Ski Team from kindergarten on, Nick Daniels is an all around skier who honed every bit of his skills by mixing a steady diet of powder skiing and gate training at Squaw. Daniels had a dandy 2011 season rolling with multiple top NorAm finishes including podiums in slalom, super G and super combined along with a good showing at the Junior World Championships.
Keith Moffat	Growing up in Berkeley, California, Keith Moffat headed to Squaw Valley with his family on weekends where skiing with the Mighty Mites turned into a ski racing career. Using skiing icon Shane McConkey and Squaw hero and World Cup winner Marco Sullivan as role models, Moffat made the U.S. Development Team in 2009 and was named to the C team in 2010. At the World Jrs in 2011, Keith earned 4th place in DH, which was the highest avhievement to date of an American in the downhill since Travis Ganong earned 4th in 2008. Making a remarkable comeback after unfortunate injuries, Keith continues to charge up the pipeline.
Foreste Peterson	Squaw Valley's Foreste Peterson was invited to train with the U.S. Development Team in Austria in 2010 and rallied that experience into a spot on the Team for the 2011 season. After a solid summer of training, she was ready to rock in 2011, but a fractured ankle sidelined her for the entire competitive season. Her return to racing did not disappoint as Peterson finished top 25 in the NorAm overall, slalom, giant slalom and super G standings, plus top 25 in slalom at the Junior World Championships. Next up NorAm titles and perhaps a World Cup start.

Other US Ski Team Athletes (Alpine A Team)

Stacey Cook	A California girl Stacey Cook moved to Mammoth Mountain just as the United States was lighting the 2002 Olympic Torch. It took her all of two years to win the NorAm overall and downhill titles and two more to land on her first Olympic Team. Cook went on a downhill tear during the 2012 winter with five World Cup top 10 finishes, including a ninth at the 2014 Olympic track in Sochi, Russia. The end result was a 10th place ranking in the season-long standings. It was the best season of her career and sparked a fire in "Cookie" that will be a full-on blaze during the 2013 World Championship season.
Tim Jitloff	Tim Jitloff, like so many Lake Tahoe tykes, was on skis by 2 and free skied through most of his youth. He stepped up to the U.S. Development Team in 2005, the same year he captured a Junior World Championship, and since has become a constant visitor to the front door of a World Cup podium. The 2012 winter was a resurgence for Jitloff with a barrage of World Cup giant slalom top 20's, including a 10th in Beaver Creek, CO – home of the 2015 World Championships. He was sitting in the driver seat of making the top 25 World Cup Finals when late-season mistake at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia bumped him to 27th on the season in the giant slalom standings. Undeterred Jitloff knows he has the speed to compete with the best, even at the upcoming 2013 World Championships where he hopes to be a contender in both giant slalom and super combined.
Ted Ligety	Skiing always comes first for 2006 Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Cup giant slalom champion Ted Ligety. Whether it's dropping cliffs in his speed suit on a cancelation day, taking the snowmobiles into the Utah backcountry or laying down some of the most incredible angles in all of ski racing, "Shred" is constantly pushing and evolving the sport. Ligety may have come up short of a fourth Audi FIS Alpine World Cup giant slalom title, but that isn't a good representation of his 2012 season. He racked up 513 GS points for the most of his career, moved back into the top 15 for slalom and finished ninth in the overall standings. He also defended his wins at Soelden, Austria and Beaver Creek, plus ripped back his Kranjska Gora, Slovenia title.
Steve Nyman	Born and bred in Utah, Steven Nyman was skiing at 2 (Dad ran the ski school at Sundance) and was a discretionary pick to the 2002 Junior Worlds squad where he landed two medals.
Laurene Ross	Ross was poised to make a big impact in on the 2012 World Cup scene but ended up with a major impact into the Lake Louise fences during the second race of the season. Ross returned to the circuit stronger than anyone could have predicted and ended up landing top 30 finishes in every race except one to earn a trip to the World Cup Finals for downhill. She then closed out the season ranked 22nd in the discipline – the best of her career.
Mikaela Shiffrin	Shiffrin's meteoric rise into the World Cup elite wasn't a surprise to anyone who's been paying attention. With the work ethic and passion of Lindsey Vonn, Shiffrin posted her first World Cup starts as a 15-year-old and nearly scored her first points. The following season (2012) was her official World Cup "rookie" year and she did not disappoint. Record: eighth in her first slalom of the season (Aspen), a slalom podium with third just after Christmas, giant slalom points in February and a trip to the elite top-25 World Cup Finals. She ended the season ranked 17th in the world in slalom – as a 17-year-old. Her peers took notice and voted her "World Cup Rookie of the Year."
Leanna Smith	Olympian Leanne Smith followed her older sister Laurel into skiing, latched onto racing and continues to shave microseconds from her time. A NorAm champion and topflight junior skier, she inked a spot on the World Cup elite after finishing 23rd in her career first World Cup start, which also happened to be the first downhill of the 2008 season. Smith posted the best results of her career during the 2012 season with personal bests in both downhill (7th, St. Moritz, SUI) and super G.
Resi Stiegler	Olympian and daughter to Olympic gold medalist Pepi Stielger, Resi (RAY-zee) was born and grew up in prime ski country (Jackson Hole, WY, and Lienz, Austria). She's represented the United States at every level of alpine ski racing - Topolino, Whistler Cup, Junior Worlds, World Cup, World Championships and the Olympics. She’s won Junior Worlds medals and U.S. titles and if not for multiple injury plagued seasons, would likely be a World Cup podium staple
Andrew Weibrecht	Andrew Weibrecht is sibling No. 4 in a family of five and took up skiing after he begged his parents to let him join older brother Jonathan at Whiteface. Now one of the most exhilarating ski racers to watch kick out of the start gate, Weibrecht transitioned from kid swinging on his parents chandeliers to becoming the 2010 Olympic super G bronze medalist.
